New Orleans, La-The Belhaven women's basketball team had a strong showing at Loyola University regardless of losing to the Wolfpack 64-51. The Blazers drop to 13-14 overall and 4-12 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. The Wolfpack improved their overall mark to 17-8 and 11-4 in the GCAC.
Things started off well for Belhaven in the first five minutes of the game as they found themselves ahead 8-7 with fifteen minutes remaining in the first half. However, the Wolfpack fought back and took the lead 11-10 with 13:02 on the clock. The Blazers answered back with some tough pressure defense to tie the game up with 11:33 on the clock as
Courtney Ward connected on a pair of three throws making the score 11-11.
The game went back and forth throughout the last 11 minutes of the first half. The contest was tied up a total of seven times and the largest lead that either team had was three points. Ward converted on a basket giving the Blazers a 28-25 lead with a minute remaining in the first half. However, Laine Woodruff hit a three pointer for Loyola with 14 seconds left in the opening period to tie the game up 28-28 as both teams headed into the locker room.
The Wolfpack controlled the second half and racked up a 61-45 lead over the Blazers with less than three minutes remaining in the contest. The Blazers broke the lead down to within 10 points. Unfortunately, it was not enough as the Wolfpack went on to lock up their senior night with a 64-51 lead over Belhaven.
Ward and
Jira Williams both had nine points a piece to pace the Blazer offense followed by
Octavia Mullins with eight points.
Jessica Barlow grabbed six rebounds to lead the team on the glass and Mullins was also active on the boards with four rebounds. Belhaven shot 36.2 percent from the field, 18.2 percent from the behind the three point line, and went 7-9 from the free throw line which equates to a conversion rate of 77.8 percent. Free throw shooting proved to be the difference in the game as Loyola was able to knock down 12 of their 16 second half attempts at the charity stripe.
The Wolfpack offense was anchored by Trenese Smith with a game high 23 points and Keiva Council tossed in 20 points for Loyola on Saturday night. Rachael Nolan seized 11 rebounds to lead the team on the glass. The Wolfpack out rebounded the Blazers 43-27.
Belhaven hits the court at the University of Mobile in another GCAC matchup on Thursday night. The tip-off is slated for 5:30 PM.
