Blazers Wrap up Belhaven Bash II with Two More Wins

Burns Tosses Perfect Game

Box Score vs. Mid-Continent    Box Score vs. Williams Baptist
Ridgeland, MS-The Belhaven softball team successfully capped off the Belhaven Bash II Tournament on Saturday afternoon with a 9-1 win over Mid-Continent University and an 8-0 shutout of Williams Baptist College at Freedom Ridge Park. The Blazers Sarah Burns made the day extra special by tossing a perfect game against Williams Baptist running her season record in the circle to 4-0. Belhaven is now 10-0 to begin the 2010 season.

Game One vs. Mid-Continent
Belhaven was the visiting team in the scorebook in game one against Mid-Continent and didn't waste any time getting runs on the board. The Blazers struck for two runs in the top of the first inning with the aid of only one hit. Jessica Eggold reached base on a fielder's choice with one out, stole second base, moved to third on a groundout by Christina Jaques, and crossed the plate on a passed ball to make it 1-0. Tiffany Ansley eventually walked, stole second, and came in on Heather Pace's RBI single accounting for the second run in the inning.

Belhaven starting pitcher Rebecca Rousseau shutdown the Cougars in their half of the first and the Blazers quickly added to the lead in the top of the second with four more runs. Eggold collected two RBI's on a base hit to right field and Ansley brought home the other two runs in the frame on a base hit to center field.

Trailing 6-0, Mid-Continent (0-4) scored what would be their only run of the game in the third when Amber Rapert dropped a single down the right field line to cut the Belhaven advantage to 6-1. The Blazers added a run in the fourth on a run scoring single by Ansley and then in the top of the fifth made it a 9-1 game when two more runs crossed the plate. Britney Webb drove in a run with a double to left field and when the left fielder bobbled the ball it opened the door for Rian O'Bannon to cross the plate. Megan Timbs came in to pitch the bottom of the fifth and she closed the door on the Cougars giving Belhaven the run rule victory.

Ansley led the Blazers at the plate with a pair of singles and had three runs batted in. Eggold went 2 for 4 with two RBI's while Webb and Heather Pace tallied an RBI each. Webb ran every time she got a chance as she collected three more stolen bases against the Cougars. Rousseau got the win for Belhaven in the circle pitching the first four innings allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts.

Kelly Fougerousse suffered the loss for Mid-Continent surrendering six runs on three hits with only two of the six runs being earned.

Williams Baptist College
The story of the day's second contest against Williams Baptist College was Sarah Burns's perfect game. Burns worked all five innings and did not allow a run, hit, or a walk and the defense was solid behind her as everyone played error free softball. Burns was nearly unhittable as she struck out eight of the 15 batters that she faced. Burns now has 27 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.72 in her four appearances so far this season.

The Belhaven offense did not disappoint either as they delivered three runs in the bottom of the first inning to get things rolling. Eggold, Ansley, and Heather Pace all delivered RBI singles to put Belhaven up 3-0 after one inning. The Blazers were kept off the board in the second and third frames, but unloaded for three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Eggold came through with another RBI single and later in the inning Christina Jaques launched her first home run of the season over the center field fence. The two run homer by Jaques extended Belhaven's lead to 6-0.

Needing two runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the run rule in effect, the Blazers got exactly that starting with an RBI groundout by Webb. The game winner proved to be unconventional as Eggold walked with two outs to load the bases and then Chelsea Randle who occupied third base caught the Eagles defense knapping by stealing home to end the game.

Eggold and Jaques led the Blazers at the plate with two RBI's each. Eggold, Ansley, and Heather Pace all had two hits apiece in the victory. Webb had three more stolen bases in the contest and is 18 for 19 in that category through the first 10 games of the season. April McCampbell took the loss for Williams Baptist (2-2) as she surrendered six runs on eight hits in four innings of work.

Belhaven will return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to NCAA Division II Delta State University for a doubleheader with the Statesman beginning at 3:00 PM.
