Belhaven Runs Past Blue Mountain College in Belhaven Classic

Jackson, MS- The Belhaven women's basketball team defeated Blue Mountain College on Friday night in Rugg Arena, 72-48 on day two of the Belhaven Holiday Classic. The Blazers went 2-0 in the Belhaven Classic defeating Lyon College on Thursday night 68-58. Defense was the story for the Blazers against Blue Mountain forcing the Toppers into 24 turnovers with the Blazers scoring 33 points off of those turnovers. 

Belhaven (9-4) was led by Jessica Barlow who turned in a double-double on the night with 20 points and a team high 14 rebounds. Kiara Johnson came up with 13 points and a team high seven assists while Regena Jackson chipped in 11 points and four assists. As a team the Blazers out rebounded the Toppers 54-46 and dominated in the paint outscoring the Toppers 42-16. 

The Blazers shot 34.2% from the field tonight while shooting a season high 83.3% from the free throw line 15-18. The Blazers managed to compile fifteen steals on the night with eight different players with at least one or two. The Blazers managed to hold the Toppers to a shooting percentage of 27.3% from the field. 

Blue Mountain College (4-6) was led by Joy Pierce with eight points. Four Topper players scored seven points apiece including Jordan McCormick, Samantha Burns, Erin Parrish, and Jessi Hayles. McCormick was the team leading rebounder with nine and Hayles had a team high four assists. The Toppers managed to force the Blazers into fourteen turnovers. A poor shooting night for the Toppers from the field and three point ranges put the game out of reach. 

The Blazers started the contest off strong and never looked back from that point on. Belhaven had full control the entire game out scoring the Toppers 38-25 in the first half taking a 13 point lead into the locker room and then coming back even stronger in the second half outscoring the Toppers 34-23 in the second half to post a final score of 72-48. 

The win brings the Blazers season record to 9-4. The Blazers will be back in action on Tuesday as they take on the University of New Orleans in Rugg Arena. Tip-off is scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM and fans can follow the action through live stats by clicking here.
