Jackson, MS- The Belhaven Women's basketball team traveled to take on cross town rival Tougaloo College Tuesday night, picking up their third win of the season defeating the Bulldogs 65-57. The Blazers outlasted the Bulldogs with their defensive effort forcing 21 turnovers and holding the Bulldogs to a shooting percentage of 30.8.
The Blazers (3-0) were led by a one two combo of
Kiara Johnson and
Rachenia Powell. Johnson led the Blazers in scoring with twenty points followed by Powell with nineteen points as both players snatched four rebounds apiece. The 19 points for Powell is a new career high.
Sarah Carr and
Sierra Cavitt chipped in nine points apiece while Carr added two assists and Cavitt snatched a team high eleven rebounds.
Jessica Barlow added nine broads to the mix and a team high of four blocks.
The Blazers got off to a slow start in the first half as they saw the Bulldogs go on a 12-2 run to start the
game. At the 2:25 mark the Blazers went on a 25-5 run to close the gap and take a 30-20 lead into half-time.
Rachenia Powell got things started in the second half burying a three at the 18:15 mark, stretching the Blazers lead to thirteen. The Bulldogs went on a rally of their own cutting the Blazers lead to seven at the 4:51 mark. However, Belhaven responded with a jumper by Powell and a layup by Johnson to close to seal the win.
Tougaloo College (1-3) was paced by Victoria Jones and Erica Grayson on the night. Jones led the way with fifteen points and twenty rebounds while Grayson turned in nine points on the night. Demara Bolton tossed in ten points and dished out six assists. As a team, the Bulldogs out-rebounded the Blazers 49-40. Tougaloo forced Belhaven into 19 turnovers, but couldn't convert their opportunities shooting just 30.8 percent from the field and 7.1 percent from three point range.
The Bulldogs were able to outscore the Blazers 37-35 in the second half yet Powell and Johnson came up big for Belhaven down the stretch. Powell hit two free-throws at the three minute mark while Johnson scored a layup with 1:26 left in the game. From that point on the Blazers held on for the victory. The win brings the Blazers season record to 3-0.
Belhaven will be back in action in their home opener Friday night at Rugg Arena. The Blazers will host the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic where they will take on Dillard University.
