Blazers Topple Blue Mountain College Saturday Afternoon

Blue Mountain, MS- The Belhaven women's basketball team kept rolling as they traveled to Blue Mountain to take on Blue Mountain College and defeated the Toppers 73-68. The Blazers were effective on the defense end forcing the Toppers into 32 turnovers and holding them to a shooting percentage of 34.5.

Belhaven (2-0) was led by Kiara Johnson who had a huge night for the Blazers shooting 11-19 from the field and was perfect from three point land posting a team high 33 points, eight assists and six steals. Sara Carr followed Johnson with 23 points on the night and shot 9 for 10 from the free-throw line. Jessica Barlow added seven points to the mix while Sierra Cavitt came up big for the Blazers on the broads pulling down a team high nine rebounds.

The Toppers in the first half had control of the game out shooting the Blazers from the free throw stripe with a 76.9% while out rebounding them 23-17 en route to a 36-30 lead at halftime. The Blazers then came alive in the second half forcing 17 turnovers and outscoring the Toppers by eleven 43-32. The Blazers shot 4 of 8 from three point land and 9-14 from free-throw line.

Blue Mountain College (1-1) was led by Erin Parrish with 23 points and 4 steals. Jordan McCormick tossed in 18 points for the Toppers while Samantha Burns grabbed 11 rebounds and contributed nine points. The Toppers managed a free-throw shooting percentage of 78.6 compared to the Blazers of 61.3% yet the Toppers struggled from the field only shooting 34.5 percent and 30.8 percent for three pointers. The Toppers forced the Blazers into 26 turnovers, but couldn't convert their opportunities ultimately hindering their chances for the win.

Down the stretch of the game Johnson and Carr hit clutch free-throws back to back helping the Blazers to seal the victory. Jessica Barlow was able to get a key offensive foul call on the Toppers that finished the game off and improved Belhaven's season record to 2-0.

Belhaven will be back in action Tuesday night as they take on Ex- GCAC opponent and cross town rival Tougaloo College at Tougaloo College. The tip-off is slated for 5:30 PM in Kroger Gymnasium.
