Box Score
Blue Mountain, MS-The Belhaven men's basketball team earned a 68-63 win in their 2010-11 season opener at Blue Mountain College on Saturday afternoon. The Blazers, who are coming off one of the best seasons in school history, had to battle hard against an upstart Blue Mountain team that was 2-0 heading into Saturday's game.
The first half proved to be low scoring as both teams tried to get a foothold in the game. Belhaven (1-0) found themselves behind after the first 20 minutes 29-28 due in large part to a strong half by Blue Mountain's Tyler Shaver who had 11 points.
Nathaniel Roche' had eight points and eight rebounds in the first half while
Rob Wallace came up with seven first half points to lead the Blazer offense in the opening period.
Wallace really got things going in the second half when he scored 20 of his game high 27 points leading Belhaven to the win. He drilled four threes in the second half and made some key baskets down the stretch as the Blazers battled back and outscored Blue Mountain (2-1) 40-34 in final 20 minutes for the win.
Not to be outdone by Wallace, Roche' posted his first double double of the season scoring 13 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.
Daryl Arnold also got in the scorebook with a double double as he dropped in 11 points and grabbed 10 boards in the game to round out the double digit scorers for Belahven. Arnold played well on both ends of the floor adding three steals to the stat sheet. Wallace had a team high five steals and picked up two assists to go along with his 27 points.
As a team, Belhaven made 44.6 percent of their field goals, 34.8 percent of their three point attempts, and made good on 45.5 of their shots at the free throw line. The Blazers won the battle of the boards 41-36 and forced 19 turnovers, but turned it over 20 times themselves.
Blue Mountain was led by Shaver who had 17 points, but had only six in the second half as the Blazer defense did a much better job of containing him on the floor in the final period. Renell Collins finished the game with 11 points and Josh McCalmon had 10 points to round out the double digit scorers for the Toppers. Lakendrick McCullum added seven points and a team high eight rebounds.
