Belhaven Surpasses Blue Mountain College

Jackson, MS- The Belhaven Women's Basketball team got back on track defeating Blue Mountain College Tuesday night in Rugg Arena 77-55. The Blazers owned the paint with nine blocks on the night and out rebounded the Topper 62-44. 

Belhaven (5-1) was led in scoring by Sarah Carr with 19 points boosting her season average to 16.3 points a game. Wendy Charles made a big impression Tuesday night contributing 17 points and nine rebounds. Erica Leflore pitched in 12 points and a team high 13 rebounds. Jessica Barlow turned in nine points and seven rebounds while Mycal Smith added seven points and a team high four blocks. Rachenia Powell and Alex Hastings both dished out a team high five3 assists apiece. 

Tuesday night was a better shooting night for the Blazers knocking down 40.6% of their attempts from the field and 42.9% of their tosses from three point range. The Blazers made their defensive presence felt forcing the Toppers into 17 turnovers which was just under their season average of turnovers for opponents of 20.3. 

Blue Mountain College (2-3) was led in scoring by Jordan McCormick with 14 points. Joy Pierce added 12 points on 4 of 7 shooting from three point land. Samantha Burns turned in a team high thirteen rebounds. The Toppers forced the Blazers into committing 21 turnovers, but couldn't capitalize on the offensive end of the floor shooting just 21.2% from the field and 25.9% from three point range. 

The pace of the game on both ends began slowly until Wendy Charles got things cooking for the Blazers with a steal than an assist to Erica Leflore for a layup at the 15:38 mark of the first half. Charles then hit a three at the 12:46 mark to give the Blazers a four point lead 11-7. Sarah Carr hit another three with 3:26 left in the half making the score 29-10 and then Wendy Charles hit a pair of free throws to end the half extending the Belhaven lead to 36-24. 

Sarah Carr got things started in the second half with a layup and Belhaven took off from that point on with a pair of free throws by Mycal Smith to giving the Blazers a 62-43 19 lead with just under eight minutes to go. The Blazers largest lead of the game came with 53 seconds on the clock following a pair of free throws by Amber Smith bumping the edge to 77-53. Chelsea Hussey hit two free throws to end the game for Blue Mountain resulting in the final score of 77-55. 

The Blazers outscored the Toppers in both halves. In the first half the Blazers scored 36 first half points and outscored the Toppers 41-31 in the second half. 

Belhaven will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Truett-McConnell College for a Southern States Athletic Conference cross divisional game starting at 5:30 PM. The Blazers have played well on the road this season with a 3-0 mark away from the friendly confines of Rugg Arena.
