Blazers Suffer First Loss of Season

Jackson, MS- The Belhaven Women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Tougaloo College 73-63 on Saturday night in Rugg Arena in the second game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Tougaloo's defense held the Blazers to a shooting percentage of 31% from the field and 33.3% for three pointers.

Belhaven (4-1) was led by Sarah Carr and Jessica Barlow on the offensive end of the floor. Carr was the leading scorer with 15 points and added three assists while Barlow followed Carr in scoring with 14 points and had a team high eleven rebounds. Kiara Johnson turned in 11 points and a team high six assists. Rachenia Powell added nine points to the mix while Erica Leflore and Mycal Smith chipped in six points apiece. 

Belhaven got off to a good start, beginning the game with a 10-2 run forcing the Bulldogs to take an early timeout with 16:59 showing on the first half clock. The Bulldogs then turned things around off a three pointer by Johanna Hirmke cutting the lead to six at 18-12 at the 12:47 mark of the opening period. Demara Bolton hit a three to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the night 25-23 with 8:27 until halftime. The Bulldogs then went on a 19-9 run to close the half and take a 44-32 lead into the locker room.

Tougaloo (3-3) was led on the night by Victoria Jones with 24 points and a team high 12 rebounds. Demara Bolton added 17 points and dished out a team high eight assists. Erica Grayson chipped in 13 points and a team high three blocks. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Blazers 46-40 and forced the Blazers into 17 turnovers.

In the second half, the Bulldogs kept their momentum off a layup by Victoria Jones and Aleka White then extended the Bulldogs lead with a layup to give Tougaloo their biggest lead of the night at 17 points. With 2:44 to play, Erica Leflore cut the Bulldog lead to 10 making it 67-57, but unfortunately that's the closest Belhaven would get as Tougaloo held on for the 73-63 win.
