Jackson, MS- The Belhaven Women's basketball team picked up their fourth win of the season defeating Dillard University 65-64 in the opening game of the 2010 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Friday night in Rugg Arena. Shooting percentages were the story of the game with Belhaven holding Dillard to a shooting percentage of 38.8 from the field and 26.1 from three point range.
The Blazers (4-0) were led by
Sarah Carr and Erica Leflore on the offensive end of the floor. Carr had 16 points with five assists followed by Leflore with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Kiara Johnson and
Rachenia Powell both scored in double figures for the Blazers as well. Johnson turned in 13 points and five assists while Powell had 11 points and boasted a team high 10 rebounds.
Belhaven came up big on the broads outrebounding Dillard University 49-36 with 26 of those rebounds being offensive. The Blazers defense forced 15 turnovers and was able to get four blocks on the night with two of them coming from Erica Leflore. The Bleu Devils didn't help their case shooting only 50% from the free throw stripe.
Dillard University (1-4) was led by Jazzmin Smith with fifteen points and four rebounds. Alexis Ruth came off the bench scoring twelve points and dishing out two assists. The Bleu Devils managed to force the Blazers into 21 turnovers but couldn't capitalize with low shooting percentages from the field, three point, and free throw line.
Belhaven got off to a good start in the first half going on a 7-2 run to open things up. The Bleu Devils then answered with a 7-2 run making the score 11-10 at the 13:46 mark of the game. The Blazers responded with a layup by Erica Laflore at the 9:27 mark and then extended their lead to 12 with a layup by
Sierra Cavitt with a 1:49 left in the half.
Kiara Johnson at the buzzar hit a three pointer to take a 15 point lead into halftime 37-22.
In the second half, Belhaven started off a little slow but picked it up at the at the 18:29 mark with a layup by Erica Leflore. Leflore then hit a jumper to extend Belhaven to their largest lead of the night at 19. At the 12:34 mark Dillard's Brandie Hurd hit a three pointer to close the gap to seven. Jazzmin Smith then hit two free throws at the 11:21 mark to make it a four point game. Alexis Ruth then hit a jumper to tie the game up at 57 all and all of a sudden the Bleu Devils were right back in it. The Bleu Devils grabbed just their second lead of the night on a layup by Val Jean Gordon with 4:32 to go in the game. The score bobbled back and forth until
Sarah Carr hit a big three with 2:10 left in the contest to give Belhaven a 65-64 lead. With nine seconds left to go in the game the Bleu Devils 'Lauren Daniel missed a three point that would have won the game but hit the back of the rim as the buzzer sounded.
Dillard University outscored the Blazers in the second half 42-28, but the three pointer by Sara Carr proved to be the game winner. The Blazers have won their first four games of the season which is one of the best starts for the program over the last few years.
The Blazers will be back in action on Saturday in game two of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic as they will take on Tougaloo College in a rematch from Tuesday night when Belhaven prevailed 65-57. The opening tipoff is slated for 6:00 PM.
