Tougaloo, MS- The Belhaven women's basketball team fell to cross town rival Tougaloo College in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action 68-52 Saturday night in the Kroger Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs advance to 9-11 overall and 5-4 in the GCAC. The loss drops the Blazers to 12-8 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
Belhaven fell behind early and never controlled the lead in Saturday night's game. Jessica Coleman got the Lady Bulldogs on the board 15 seconds into the contest which began an 11-0 run to open the game. The Blazers got their first basket about five minutes into the action on a pair of free throws by
Jira Williams.
Belhaven got back to within six after
Jessica Barlow contributed a lay up assisted by
Courtney Ward at the 7:06 mark of the first half. Tougaloo then responded and pushed their advantage back to 14 when Victoria Jones converted on a 15 foot jump shot making the score 27-13 with 1:35 on the clock. The half came to a close with Tougaloo owning a 30-17 lead over the Blazers going into the locker room.
In the second half, Belhaven was unable to make much of a dent in the Lady Bulldog lead early on. Tougaloo stretched their lead to 22 points at 57-35 with 6:34 to go in the game on a jumper made by Erica Grayson. The Blazers were then able to reduce the deficit to 14 points when
Octavia Mullins made a layup off an assist by
Brittany Carr making the score 62-48 Tougaloo. However, Tougaloo was able to hold off Belhaven in the final seconds to come away with the 68-52 victory.
The Blazers were led by Mullins with 13 points and eight rebounds. Carr added 12 points followed by
Jessica Barlow with seven. Belhaven hit 39.6 percent of their shots from the field and made 12.5 percent of their three's. The Blazers struggled at the line once again converting on just 50 percent of their attempts from the charity stripe.
Tougaloo got an exceptional performance from Victoria Jones who had a game high 23 points and 16 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive end of the floor. Jessica Coleman finished with 13 points and two assists. Additionally, they connected on 48 percent of their shots from the field, 33.3 percent of their three's, and 60.7 percent of their free throws.
Belhaven will travel to LSU-Shreveport to battle the Lady Pilots on Thursday. The tip off is slated for 5:30 PM.
