Lady Blazers Extend Winning Streak to Four

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven softball team picked up another doubleheader sweep on Tuesday night, this time over NCAA Division I Grambling State University at Freedom Ridge Park. The Lady Blazers took game one by a final of 7-2 and upended the Lady Tigers in game two by a final of 9-1. With the wins, Belhaven improved to 4-0 against Grambling this year and they now stand at 29-13 overall in 2009.
 
Game One
 
Belhaven controlled the lead throughout the entire first game striking for their first run in the bottom of the first inning. Jessica Eggold singled with one out, stole second base, and came in on a two out double by Mallory Meadows to put the Lady Blazers up 1-0. In the bottom of the second inning, Belhaven put some distance between themselves and Grambling with four more runs. The Lady Blazers got an RBI single from Britney Webb and RBI doubles from Eggold and Heather Pace.
 
The scored stayed at 5-0 Belhaven until the top of the fifth when the Lady Tigers got on the board for the first time on a Chae'wayla Jackson one out single who then later scored on double by Latrice Wood. Belhaven struck back for two more runs in the bottom of the inning with four hits off pitcher Patrice Bailey. Belhaven starting pitcher Salina Cervantes helped her own cause by delivering and RBI single scoring Heather Pace for the innings first score. Britanee Pace had the other run batted in during the frame with a single to left that chased home Tiffany Ansley.
 
Grambling scored once more in the top of the sixth but Cervantes limited the damage and closed out the game for the complete game victory. Cervantes improves to 13-6 on the season allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Bailey suffered the loss giving up all seven runs on 10 hits.
 
Offensively, the Lady Blazers got contributions up and down the lineup with six different players with an RBI each. Webb, Eggold, both Pace's, Cervantes, and Meadows all drove in runs while Eggold, Heather Pace, and Cervantes collected two hits apiece.
 
Game Two
 
The Lady Tigers had the early advantage in game two of the afternoon with a run in the top of the first inning against Belhaven starting pitcher. Rosanna Alvarado had a base hit in the inning and scored on an error by Webb to take an early 1-0. The Grambling lead didn't last long as Belhaven fought back for three runs in the bottom of the frame. The Lady Blazers had four hits in the inning with the first coming off the bat of Eggold with one out. Belhaven then had three RBI doubles in a row by Meadows, Ansley, and Steichen making the score 3-1.
 
The Lady Blazers posted single runs in the second and third to build the lead to 5-1. In the second, Eggold singled to right plating Webb and in the third Britanee Pace had a sacrifice fly which brought home Ansley. In the fourth the Lady Blazers made the score 7-1 thanks in part to a Grambling error. Webb reached base on a dropped fly ball, which kept the inning alive as she eventually crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Meadows followed that up with a single to drive in Heather Pace.
 
Belhaven ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with two more unearned runs on another dropped fly ball which allowed the first run to score. Heather Pace then came to the plate to drive in Eggold with a single to left center putting the run rule into effect.
 
Ashley Mottola pitched all six innings limiting the Lady Tigers to one unearned run on just two hits. The win gives Mottola an 11-4 record on the season. Meadows had two RBI's and two hits to lead the Lady Blazer offensive attack. Heather Pace had three hits and one RBI while Eggold, Ansley, Steichen, and Britanee Pace each added an RBI.
 
Belhaven returns to the field on Wednesday afternoon at Lambuth in a non-conference doubleheader that is slated to get underway at 1PM.
