Lady Blazers Split Double Header with Spring Hill

Mobile, AL-The Belhaven softball wrapped up their two day road trip to Mobile, AL on Wednesday by splitting a double header at Spring Hill College. The Lady Blazers lost game one 5-4 but came back to shut out the Lady Badgers in the second game 5-0. Belhaven is now 12-7 overall and 1-3 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Spring Hill now stands at 7-11 in the 2009 and are 1-1 in the GCAC.
 
Game One                                                                 
 
The Lady Badgers got on the board first in game one in the bottom of the first inning on a two out base hit by Brittany Abate plating Monica Zeringue from third base to make it 1-0 Spring Hill. The Spring Hill defense was successful in keeping the Lady Blazers off the board through the first two innings of the game.
 
However, Belhaven grabbed the lead in the top of the third with two runs after the first two batters had been retired. Kayla Maldonado drew a walk and then Britney Webb drove a single up the middle to put runners on first and second. Jessica Eggold then stepped to the plate and wrapped a single up the middle plating Maldonado and Webb came home on a wild throw by Zeringue to make it 2-1 Belhaven.
 
The Lady Blazers tacked on a run in the top of the fourth as Mallory Meadows led off the frame with a base hit up the middle. Clarissa Williams pinch ran for Meadows and came around to score on Keresa Steichen's two out single to left center putting Belhaven up 3-1.
 
Belhaven then got their fourth run of the game in the top of the fifth when Webb walked to begin the inning, stole second, and advanced to third base on a foul out by Eggold. Webb then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Heather Pace pushing the Lady Blazer advantage to 4-1.
 
Belhaven controlled the lead going into the bottom of the seventh needing just three outs to secure the win. Unfortunately, Spring Hill was able to string together three hits and four runs to steal a win from the Lady Blazers. The game winning run came home on a wild pitch by Ashley Mottola allowing Abate to score giving the Lady Badgers a 5-4 win.
 
Mallory Meadows took the loss dropping her record to 2-1 on the season. Lauren Crane got the win in relief for Spring Hill firing the final three innings surrendering one run and not allowing any hits to raise her record to 2-1. Offensively, Belhaven was led by Webb who went 2 for 3 at the plate while Eggold, Pace, and Steichen each drove in a run.
 
Game Two
 
Game two of the afternoon was all Belhaven as the Lady Blazers rolled to a 5-0 shutout victory over the Lady Badgers. Belhaven set the tone in the top of the first scoring three runs on three hits. Webb led off the game with a triple to deep right center and came in when Eggold dropped a single into left field making it 1-0 Lady Blazers. Belhaven was then aided by a pair of Spring Hill errors which enabled Eggold to advance second after getting the base hit followed by Pace reaching first on a misplayed ground ball by Abate.
 
The Lady Blazers got run number two on a sacrifice fly by Meadows scoring Eggold from third. After a ground out by Tiffany Ansley moved Pace to second, Salina Cervantes hit a single up the middle bringing home Pace for the third run of the inning.
 
Neither team would score over the next three innings until the Lady Blazers struck for two more runs in the top of the fifth. Webb reached on an error with one out and stole second to get into scoring position. Eggold flared a single into shallow left field bringing in Webb with Eggold going to second on a throw to home plate. With runners on first and third, Meadows hit into a fielder's choice as Eggold scored from third to make it 5-0 in favor of Belhaven.
 
The Lady Blazer defense and starting pitcher Salina Cervantes went on to close out the game and lock up the 5-0 win. Cervantes pitched all seven innings shutting out the Lady Badgers on just four hits for the win improving her record to 5-3. She also recorded two strikeouts in Wednesday afternoon's win. Samantha Brooks was charged with her sixth loss in nine decisions for the Lady Badgers.
 
Offensively, Eggold and Meadows had 2 RBI's a piece while Cervantes helped her own cause with one RBI. Webb and Eggold each collected two hits apiece to lead the hit parade.
 
Belhaven returns to action Thursday night at Freedom Ridge Park for a double header with Grace College out of Indiana. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 4:30 PM.
