Jackson, MS-The Belhaven softball team came from behind twice on Saturday afternoon to pick up a pair of wins against Lyon College at Freedom Ridge Park. The Lady Blazers are now 9-4 on the season while the Pipers fall to 3-3.
Game One
In game one, Lyon cracked the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with a single tally. Belhaven countered in the bottom of the first with a run coming on a base hit by
Jessica Eggold that plated
Britney Webb to make it a 1-1 game. The Pipers would jump ahead 6-1 with five runs in the third inning and at that point things were not looking good for the Lady Blazers.
Belhaven got two runs back in the bottom of the third when
Heather Pace singled home
Britney Webb followed shortly thereafter by a
Mallory Meadows RBI hit that plated Pace making the score 6-3. Lyon then made it 10-3 with a four spot in the fourth inning and regained the momentum in the game.
The Lady Blazers had an offensive explosion in the bottom of the inning getting five runs to climb to within two runs of the Pipers. Meadows blasted a two run homer and
Britney Webb came through with a double with the bases loaded. When the inning came to a close, the scoreboard read 10-8 in favor of Lyon College.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Belhaven knotted the score at 10-10 with a pair of runs on the bottom of the sixth. Meadows singled to right to begin the inning and then
Tiffany Ansley doubled to put runners on second and third. A wild pitch by Faith Richmond brought home Meadows and then a sacrifice fly by
Salina Cervantes brought in Ansley to tie the game.
The game went to the seventh tied and the International Tie Breaker rule came into effect putting Pace on second to begin the inning. After Meadows hit a fly ball to center, Ansley shot a single up the middle scoring Pace to complete the comeback victory 11-10.
Cervantes got the win in relief while Webb, Britnee Pace, Meadows, and Ansley each had three hits a piece.
Game Two
Belhaven had to come from behind again in game two following a four run first inning by the Pipers. The Lady Blazers did get a single run in the bottom of the first when
Britney Webb led off the inning with a home run making the score 4-1.
The Lady Blazers took control in the bottom of the third striking for six runs on six hits. The Lady Pipers also committed four miscues which helped Belhaven's cause. The Lady Blazers got some good defense and pitching from Cervantes to close out the game and secure Belhaven's ninth victory of the year. Offensively, the Lady Blazers were led by Webb, Meadows, Ansley, and
Heather Pace with two hits a piece.
Belhaven takes the field again on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to NCAA Division I Grambling University for a 2 PM non-conference matchup.
