Lady Blazers Upended by Mississippi Valley State

Jackson, MS-On a cold an windy afternoon at Freedom Ridge Park, the Belhaven softball team lost a pair of games to NCAA Division I Mississippi Valley State University 12-4 and 19-0. The Lady Blazers are now 7-4 overall on the season. The five time defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Devilettes improve to 11-2 in 2009.
 
Game One
 
Belhaven fell behind early in game one as Mississippi Valley State put a four spot on the board in the first inning. The Lady Blazers were shutout in the first two innings and trailed 4-0 going into the top of the third. That's when the Devilettes struck for two more runs and built a quick 6-0 lead.
 
Belhaven made a run to get back in the game in the bottom of the third by scoring three times to cut Mississippi Valley State's advantage in half. With one out in the inning, Jessica Eggold reached on a walk and then Heather Pace sent a single up the middle to put runners on first and second. Mallory Meadows then doubled to center field driving home Eggold for Belhaven's first run.
 
Tiffany Ansley and Salina Cervantes drew walks allowing another run to score to make it 6-2 MVSU. Britanee Pace then flied out to right field but an errant throw to the infield by Ashley Hobbs allowed Meadows to cross the plate for the third run. The inning then came to an end with the Lady Blazers trailing 6-3.
 
The Devilettes put the game away over the next two innings scoring three times in the fourth and fifth to expand their advantage to 12-3. Belhaven added a run in the bottom of the fifth when Meadows came home on a passed ball, but it wasn't enough to prolong the game as Mississippi Valley State won by a final of 12-4 in five innings.
 
Meadows led the Lady Blazer offense by going 2 for 2 at the plate while picking up an RBI and two runs scored. Cervantes took the loss as the starting pitcher surrendering six earned runs over the five innings she worked.
 
Game Two
 
The second game was all MVSU as they ran away with the 19-0 victory. The Devilettes scored seven runs in the second, four in the third, and eight in the fourth. Belhaven could only muster four hits and had three errors in the field. Kayla Maldonado was the leading hitter for Belhaven going 2 for 2 at the dish.
 
Mississippi Valley State pounded out 20 hits including a pair of home runs in their offensive explosion. Ashley Mottola took the loss to fall to 4-2 on the season.
 
Belhaven will return to action on Saturday morning beginning at 11 AM as they host Lyon College in a double header out at Freedom Ridge Park.
