Jackson, MS-The Belhaven women's basketball team has won two in a row and four of their last five games thanks to a 75-71 win over the University of Mobile Saturday night in Rugg Arena. The Lady Blazers are now 17-9 overall and 8-6 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, which puts them in fifth place in the league. Belhaven is one game behind William Carey for fourth and two games in back of Xavier for third place. With the loss, Mobile is now 12-14 overall and 5-9 in the GCAC.
Belhaven put the pressure on early and often using a strong first half of play to build a 41-34 lead going into the break. The Lady Blazers dialed up seven three pointers in the opening 20 minutes on 15 attempts from behind the arc. Overall, Belhaven made good on 45.5 percent of their shots from the field with some good looks down inside the paint.
The Lady Rams did not go quietly as they continued to fight all the way to the end of the game. Mobile pulled to within a couple of points in the final minute but the Lady Blazers fought off the rally to secure the victory.
Holly Dial finished the game with a game high 20 points and a team high five rebounds.
Jaelyn Stringer wrapped up another outstanding week with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Stringer had 26 points and nine rebounds in Belhaven's win over William Carey on Thursday night.
Jira Williams rounded out the Lady Blazer double digit scorers with 12 points and four rebounds.
Courtney Ward continued to be effective distributing the basketball by dealing out a game high six assists. As a team, Belhaven had a season high 23 assists in Saturday's win over the Lady Rams. The Lady Blazers also held a slight edge on the boards outrebounding Mobile 29-28.
As a team, Belhaven hit 46.8 percent of their field goals, 42.9 percent of their three pointers, and connected on 80 percent of their shots at the foul line.
The University of Mobile was led by Gerica Johnson with 19 points and eight rebounds followed by Blair Stevens off the bench with 15 points. Danielle Goodly added 11 points and Sherri McIntosh chipped in with 10 points and a total of eight boards.
Belhaven will have a few days off before heading back down to New Orleans on Thursday night to battle Southern University of New Orleans at 5:30 PM. The Lady Blazers won in the first meeting of the season 70-53.
