Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's basketball team won game two of the 2008-2009 season defeating Wesley College (0-2) Tuesday night at Rugg Arena 81-64. The Blazers are now 2-0 to begin the season with two impressive victories over the Warriors and Blue Mountain College this past Saturday.
The Warriors jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before
Krayleon Winston knocked down a three point shot off an assist by
Dax Miller to get Belhaven on the board. With about 18 minutes to go in the first half, Winston drilled his second three in the first two minutes tying the score at six. Another three point shot with just under 18 minutes in the first half gave Belhaven a 9-8 lead and from that point on the Blazers never trailed.
Belhaven then went on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to nine and eventually took a 42-20 lead going into the break. Belhaven shot 41 percent from the field and 42 percent from behind the three point line in the first half.
Korey Whiting had 10 points to lead the Blazer offense while the Belhaven defense forced 12 first half turnovers. The Blazers also out rebounded the Warriors 26-16 with 12 of the 26 boards being offensive.
In the second half, Wesley opened with a quick 6-0 run to cut Belhaven's lead to 16 with about 16 minutes to go in the game. However, the Blazers quickly regained control and eventually pushed their lead to 32 on a
Thomas Tunberg field goal with just over eight minutes to play. The Blazers continued to play well in the closing minutes to lock down the 81-46 win.
Belhaven was led by
Korey Whiting with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Phillip Holmes came of the bench to add another 12 points and five rebounds.
Dax Miller pulled down eight boards and dropped in eight points in Tuesday's win. As a team, the Blazers shot 44 percent from the field and 37 percent from the three point line. Belhaven dominated the glass inside with 47 team rebounds compared to 31 for the Warriors. The Blazers also did an excellent job taking care of the ball committing just 11 turnovers.
Belhaven returns to action Tuesday November 11th as they travel to Blue Mountain College to face the Toppers for the second time this season. The tip-off is slated for 7:30 PM.
