Lady Blazers Bounce Wiley College

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven women's basketball team returned home Tuesday night to face Wiley College in Rugg Arena and topped the Lady Wildcats 72-64 to lock up their seven win of the season against just one defeat.

During the first 12 minutes of the game, the score remained close with the largest lead for either team being six by the Lady Blazers at 7-1 with 16:38 to go in the first half. At that point Wiley ran off a 9-3 run to knot the score at 10 a piece with 14:17 remaining on the first half clock. It would prove to be the first of five ties over the next six minutes of the game. With the scored tied at 20-20, Belhaven put together at 16-3 run to take a double digit lead of 36-23 as the first half buzzer sounded.

Jaelyn Stringer and Mallory Hammack each seven points in the first half to lead the Lady Blazers in scoring. Hammack also had a team high four rebounds for Belhaven in the first period. The Lady Blazers shot 43 percent from the field and had a slight edge in rebounds over the Lady Wildcats 19-16. Wiley's high scorers were Kristi Alexander and Nekia Hicks who had five points each. The Lady Wildcats went 10 of 25 from the field for a 40 percent shooting percentage.

Mallory Hammack got the Lady Blazers going in the second half by drilling a three point field goal to give Belhaven their largest lead of the night at 16 points 39-23. Slowly but surely, Wiley began to make a run and get some things going on the offensive side of the ball. The Lady Wildcats were eventually able to get back into the game with just over eight minutes to go in the game. Kristi Alexander hit two free throws to pull Wiley within six points of the lead. With 5:45 to go in the game, Merve Yildirm hit a huge three point shot to put the Lady Blazers back up by 10 points, 68-58. Jaelyn Stringer made it a 13 point spread with 2:55 left connecting on a two point field goal off an assist by Courtney Ward. From that point, the Lady Blazers were able to hang on the rest of the way to secure the 72-64 win.

Jaelyn Stringer had a huge night scoring 18 points on 8 of 14 shooting from the field. Mallory Hammack also played well dropping in 16 points and grabbing six rebounds. Jira Williams led the Lady Blazers in rebounding and assists with seven boards and a game high ten assists. Williams also added nine points in the Belhaven victory. From the field, the Lady Blazers connected on 46 percent of their shots and hit a total of seven three pointers in the game. Five of those treys came at key points in the second half. Wiley had five players score in double figures as Katrina Harris led the way with 12 points. Latoya Murray and Nekia Hicks each had 11 points and Whitney Goard along with Kristi Alexander chipped in 10 points a piece.

The Lady Blazers will have some time off before getting back on the court December 16th when they face Carroll College in the Montana State-Northern University tournament. The game is scheduled to get underway at 6 PM.
