Florence, MS-The Belhaven men's basketball traveled to Wesley College Tuesday night and came away with a hard fought victory over the Warriors 63-57. Belhaven cruised to an 81-64 win over Wesley in the second game of the season, but tonight it was a different story. The Warriors pesky zone defense gave the Blazer offense all they could handle. However, the Blazers were able to find a way to pull out the win and go to 5-0 on the season.
Wesley scored the first basket of the game on a bucket by Josh Cole 14 seconds into the game. Belhaven took the lead for the first time 3-2 on a basket by
Iman Walcott with 18:39 on the clock. That basket began a 23-7 run by the Blazers which culminated in a 24-9 lead with 9:28 to go in the first half. The Warriors battled back and began to chip away at the lead outscoring Belhaven 23-11 over the final 9:28 of the first half to trim the Blazer lead to three, 35-32 heading into the break.
Dax Miller was the leading scorer for the Blazers in the first half dropping in nine points while
Korey Whiting led the team in rebounding with seven boards. Belhaven shot 50 percent from the field going 14 of 28 in the first half. Each team had eight turnovers and the Blazers won the rebounding battle 18-14. Curtis Bailey and Terrance Robinson each had eight points for the Warriors in the first half.
Wesley came out of the locker room in the second half and continued to build on the momentum they had taken into the locker room. The Warriors took the lead on a three pointer by Curtis Bailey about a minute and thirty seconds into the second half. Wesley did not relinquish the lead until
Phillip Holmes knocked down a field goal with 3:56 to go giving the Blazers a 54-53 advantage. The Warriors then briefly jumped ahead again 55-54 on a pair of free throws by Josh Cole. The Blazer defense then tightened up and allowed the offense to put together a 9-2 run to close out the game and the victory.
Korey Whiting was Belhaven's top scorer and rebounder with 14 points and nine boards.
Dax Miller also had 11 points and had four assists in the game. The Blazers shot 43 percent from the field and had a slight edge in rebounding 37-31. Each team committed 17 turnovers in Tuesday's game. Curtis Baily finished the night with a game high 16 points for the Warriors.
Belhaven will hit the road on Friday night as they head to Jackson, TN to face the Lambuth Eagles for an 8 PM tipoff. The Blazers will then play Freed-Hardeman University Saturday afternoon at 2 PM.
