Barbourville, KY-The Belhaven football team struggled on offense for the second consecutive week losing to Union College 36-7 in the final game of 2008. The Blazers finished the season with an overall record of 2-9 and a 1-4 Mid South Western division record. Union completes the regular season with a 9-2 record and is waiting to see if they qualify for a spot in the NAIA Naional football championship tournament. The Bulldogs entered Saturdays game ranked 15
th in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll.
Belhaven's defense played tough in the first half again on Saturday holding Union to 15 first half points to keep the Blazers in the game at halftime. Two of the 15 points scored by the Bulldogs came off of a safety with 8:14 to go in the second quarter. Union accounted for their other scores on two field goals by Jacob Appleby and a 16 yard touchdown pass from Mike Brinkley to Chris Thomas.
Including the first half Saturday, the offense took a six quarter scoring drought into the second half of Saturday's game against Union.
Ryan Duvall started the game at quarterback for the Blazers and completed 7 of 14 passes for 58 and two interceptions.
Union promptly extended their lead to 22-0 at the beginning of the third quarter on a Terrence Pollock 13 yard touchdown run to cap off a three play 36 yard drive. The Bulldogs then tacked on two more touchdowns capitalizing on another Mike Brinkley touchdown strike from 60 yards to Kyle Callahan making the score 29-0. With 10:42 to go in the game, Chris Thomas retuned a Belhaven punt 77 yards to make it a 36-0 Union lead. Belhaven finally got on the board with 7:07 to go in the fourth quarter as Senior
Andrew Carcich connected with
Anthony Embry on a eight yard touchdown strike to make the score 36-7.
Carcich was the quarterback for the Blazers in the second half and went 17-27 for 187 yards and a touchdown in his final game at Belhaven. Carcich also ran the ball eight times for 43 net yards.
Ricardo Bolton was the Blazers leading rusher taking 18 carries for 70 yards. Bolton also helped anchor the air attack hauling in four passes for 97 yards. Embry caught ten passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. As a team, the Belhaven offense had 79 yards rushing and 245 yards through the air. Their total offensive output added up to 324 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Reginald Lumpkin made 14 tackles, broke up a pass and tallied a quarterback sack.
Eric Ortiz had ten total tackles including two for losses and a quarterback sack.
DeMorrius Jones and
Jonathan Reed each came away with an interception for the Blazers Saturday afternoon.
Belhaven will now look to 2009 as a number of players are returning for next season. With a solid recruiting class, it could be the building block for an outstanding year next season.
