JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven track and field runner Brooklyn Schumaker was tabbed as the C Spire Athlete of the Week following her performances on the track this past Saturday at the Jim Green Invitational, hosted by Illinois College.Â
She competed in the 400 meters, 800 meters and was a part of the 4x400 relay events last week.
In the 400 meters, the junior earned a top-5 finish in the event, while breaking a school record. Finishing fourth out of 35 runners, she finished with a 59.98 time, becoming the first to finish the event under 1:00 in school history. She breaks Juanita Sanchez's 1:00.61 mark, set last February at the same event.Â
She would top that performance in the 800 meters. The Moscow, Idaho native earned top honors in the event, posting a 2:27.07 mark out of 39 runners in the event. The mark is a personal best for Schumaker, and the third-best in program history.Â
In the 4x400, Schumaker, along with Lydia Brooks, JaLeea Bonnell and Madison Schumaker, finished second in the event with a time of 4:15.52, missing the winners of William Woods University by just over two seconds.Â
Inside the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), Schumaker is ranked 10th in the 400 meters and 27th in the 800 meters.Â
Schumaker and the rest of the Blazers return to Birmingham, Ala. to compete in the Samford Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex on Saturday.Â
