JACKSON, Miss. - Belhaven sprinter Chandler Nelson was named the C Spire Athlete of the Week following his performance at the Rhodes 6-Way Invitational on Saturday.

Nelson led the Blazers to a third place finish at the meet at Rhodes College with his performances in the 200 meters, 400 meters and the 4x400 meter relays.

The St. James, Louisiana native won the 400 meters, out of 12 runners, with a 51.20 mark, 0.14 seconds ahead of teammate Silvanus Johnson, who finished at 51.34. Nelson is 17th in the NCCAA in the event.

Nelson also ran the 200 meters and finished sixth out of 10 runners in the event with a 23.62, missing his season best by 0.25 seconds. However, the freshman helped the quartet of Johnson, Andric Thomas and Larry Stewart win the 4x400 meter relays with a 3:28.19 finish, missing the season-best by 1.4 seconds. The quartet currently holds the 12th-fastest time in the event in the NCCAA.

Nelson and the rest of the Blazers return to action this weekend at the Southern Miss Invitational in Hattiesburg. The meet will begin on Friday, April 15 and runs through Saturday.
