JACKSON, Miss. - Sophomore mid-distance runner Brooklyn Schumaker has been selected as the C Spire Athlete of the Week following her performance at the Southern Invitational on March 12.
Schumaker set a new school record in the 800 meters and also helped set a new mark in the 4 x 400 relay at the meet hosted by Birmingham-Southern College.
In the 800 meters, the sophomore finished 10th out of 36 runners in the event with 2:25.46, breaking the record set last season by 1.2 seconds.
Along with Mariah Sanchez, Juanita Sanchez and JaLeea Bonnell, Schumaker helped win the 4 x 400 relay event. Out of 14 participating teams, the quartet ran to a new school record of 3:56.69, which is the best mark in the NCCAA.
Schumaker and the rest of the Blazers return to action this weekend, when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for the start of the University of Alabama Relays. The three-day event begins on Thursday at the Sam Bailey Track & Field Stadium.
