JACKSON, Miss. - Juanita Sanchez has been selected as the C Spire Athlete of the Week following her performance this past week, ending January 23, 2016.

Sanchez, a senior for Track & Field, has earned a bid to the NCCAA Indoor Championships with her finish at the Samford Pentathlon at Birmingham Crossplex on January 20-21.

The Belen, New Mexico native finished the Pentathlon 12th overall with a total of 2,903 points. Sanchez’s best event of the day was during the 800 meters where she finished third with a 2:26:92, breaking the school record that she set last year (2:27:37).

During the high jump, the senior finished in a tie for eighth place, clearing 1.51 meters, only missing the school record by .04 meters. In the Long Jump, Sanchez cleared 4.59 meters. Sanchez also finished with 8.29 meters in the Shot Put and ran a 10.23 in the 60 Meter Hurdles to round out her performance.

This is Sanchez’s first C Spire Athlete of the Week Award.

Sanchez and the rest of the Blazers Track & Field team will return to action February 6 at the Jim Green Invitational hosted by Illinois College.
