Davis Commits to Lady Blazers

Jackson, Miss., Jessica Davis is the latest commitment, for Coach Lydia Smith, and the Lady Blazers. Davis joins Belhaven from Mary Esther, FL, where she played at Fort Walton Beach Senior High School. She was a part of the All-Northwest Florida Team for 3 consecutive years (10-12).
"The school has a great Physical Therapy Program," Davis said about why she chose Belhaven.
Jessica has 4 years of club experience with the West Florida Volleyball Club, Northwest Florida Volleyball Club, and Unity Volleyball Club.
Lady Blazers Add Clark

Jackson, Miss., Courtney Clark has agred to become the newest edition of the 2008 Lady Blazers Volleyball Team. Clark, a right side hitter, from Roseville, CA, was a team captain for Woodcreek Hgih School and honorable Mention All-Metro.
"I really loved the campus," said Clark. "Many of the things that are special abou Belhaven are things that I was looking for in a colege. I was able to practice and hang out with next years returners (on my visit) and had a really good time with them."
Kourtney has over 5 years of club experience. She played for Gold Cal, Nor Cal Select, The Creek, and High Impact.
Lady Blazers Sign
Kenyon Joel Thornton
Jackson, Miss., Mary Jeanne Kenyon is signed a letter of intent to become the latest edition to the 2008 Belhaven College Lady Blazers. Kenyon is a Defensive Specialist from Butler, PA, where she was a successful multi-sport athlete at First Baptist Christian School.
In commenting on what convinced her to join the Lady Blazers Mary Jeanne said, "In addition to the high level of competition, I really liked the girls, and the coach is great. Last but certainly not least, it seems like a team that plays to glorify God and not themselves."
Mary Jeanne has spent 7 years playing club volleyball for King of the Court Volleyball.
LADY BLAZERS BUILD BRIDGES, HELP COMMUNITY
The Lady Blazers Volleyball Team
has been volunteering at the Center for Pregnancy Choices (CPC) this
spring. The CPC is the Lady Blazers' "Home Team" for the 2007-2008
school year.
"We wanted to team up with an organization that had a good mission, and the CPC has just that," said head coach Lydia Smith. "They help by serving women in the community by helping to meet their needs, making them aware of the choices they have, along with the responsibilities that come along with being a mother. We began serving there on Dr. Martin Luther King Day and have made an effort to serve most Wednesdays to help in any way possible." "Our tasks have come in a various forms such as, sorting through clothing & an assortment of donated items, making diaper bags for new mothers, and cleaning their facility as needed. We're happy to be able to support an organization that promotes, serves, and loves others as Jesus Christ has called us to do."
Atwood Latest Lady Blazer Joel Thornton
Jackson, Miss., Christina Atwood is the latest commitment to the 2008 Belhaven Lady Blazers Volleyball Team. Christina is a middle/outside hitter from Vancleave, MS. She played for Vancleave High School, where she was selected the Mississippi Press Volleyball Player of the Year in 2006, All-Stats (2007), All-District (2006 & 2007) and Most Valuable Player for Vancleave High School twice.
"I loved the beautiful campus and inviting atmosphere at Belhaven," said Atwood on why she chose to play for the Lady Blazers. "The team was very welcoming and I connected with them as well as coach Smith easily. It took much thought, but I believe this is going to be a wonderful fit for me. The Biology Department seems very promising to my future as well, which is another important factor in my decision to choose Belhaven College."
Skopal Joins Lady

Jackson, Miss., Melissa Skopal, a 5'9" right side hitter from Houston, TX, has committed to the Lady Blazers Volleyball Team. Melissa was a captain of the volleyball team at St. Pius High School for both her junior and senior years. She has over 5 years of club experience that includes playing for teams such as VSelect 18 Black, Texas Tornados, and Club Texas.
"I loved the team and the coach," said Skopal. "One of my good friends has also signed to play there (Erinn Hampton). It looks like a good program, and I personally got a good feeling while I was there that I didn't get at any other colleges."
Belhaven Inks

Jackson, Miss., Belhaven College Volleyball inked it's first prospect for the 2008 season as Erin Hampton committed to become the latest Lady Blazer. Hampton, a 5'9" Outside hitter from Dulles High School in Sugarland, TX, was an All-District player in high school and has spent 6 years on club teams such as Spike Sport, Houston Juniors, and the Texas Tornados.
Hampton said, "The (Belhaven) atmosphere and my future teammates" were the deciding factors in her decision to become a Lady Blazer.
Belhaven's Hart
All-Region XIII Daniel Hearn
Jackson, Miss., Belhaven College Volleyball team member Kathryn Hart has been named to the NAIA Region XIII All-Region team. The senior from Kennedale, TX, led the Blazers in kills (346), and was second on the team in kills per game (2.44), and blocks (235).
“I am very proud of Kat,” said Head Coach Lydia Smith. “She was a very hard worker who led by example. She was the type of player you love to coach and will be very hard to replace.”
The GCAC represented the majority of this year’s All-Region team with 8 out of the total 12 members coming from the GCAC.
2007 Region XIII Tournament Schedules
Volleyball Season Comes to End at
Regional Daniel Hearn
Mobile, Ala., The Belhaven Volleyball team traveled to Mobile, AL last weekend to take part in the NAIA Region XIII Volleyball Tournament. On Friday, the Lady Blazers dropped a 0-3 contest to Loyola University in their first match of the tournament before falling 0-3 to Lee University.
The Lady Blazers battled GCAC foe Loyola in their first match of the tournament. The match marked the fourth meeting of the two teams this season. Although the matches went back and forth, the Wolfpack was able to get the best of the Blazers in straight sets 26-30, 24-30, and 29-31. Leading the way for the Blazers was Roz Sabella (10 kills), Kelsey Stack (32 set assists), Ashley Morgan (27 digs), and Amanda Evans (8.5 blocks).
Facing elimination, Belhaven went up against a very talented Lee University team. The Lady Flames went undefeated in Southern States Athletic Conference play to win the conference championship. The match was also very close but just like the first, the Lady Blazers were never able to grab enough momentum and fell 28-30, 13-30, and 26-30. Statistical leaders for the Blazers on the offensive side of the net were Sara Ayala and Kelsey Stack, with 6 kills and 18 setting assists, respectively. On defense, Roz Sabella recorded a team high 13 digs, while Amanda Evans chipped in with 7 blocks.
With the loss, the Lady Blazers season comes to an end.
Volleyball Qualifies For 2007 Region XIII Tournament
Joel Thornton Jackson, Miss., The Belhaven College Lady Blazers Volleyball Team (22-16) has qualified for the 2007 Region XIII Tournament to be played in Mobile, AL. Tournament format has the Blazers competing in pool play on Friday with the top 2 teams moving on to bracket play on Saturday. Six teams qualified for this year's tournament. Pool A will consist of University of Mobile, Shorter College and Berry College, while Belhaven College, Lee University and Loyola University will make up Pool B. The Lady Blazers will open pool play against Loyola University at Spring Hill College. Game time is set for 9:00 AM. Their next game will follow immediately as they play Lee University at 11:30 AM. Saturday's bracket play will begin at 9:00 AM, with all four teams being in action at the same time. One game will be played at Spring Hill College and one at the University of Mobile. The tournament is being hosted by the University of Mobile, and the Championship will be on their court at 1:00 PM.

Players Make All GCAC Team
Joel Thornton Jackson, Miss. The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announced the 2007 Women's All-Conference Volleyball Team. Three Belhaven Lady Blazers were selected: senior middle blocker Kathryn Hart, senior right side hitter Roz Sabella and junior setter Kelsey Stack. All three are repeat selections as they were selected last year. These Lady Blazers are looking forward to more 2007 volleyball, as the team earned the right to play in the NAIA Region XIII tournament.
