LADY BLAZERS BUILD BRIDGES, HELP COMMUNITY

Lady Blazers working with donations

The Lady Blazers Volleyball Team has been volunteering at the Center for Pregnancy Choices (CPC) this spring. The CPC is the Lady Blazers' "Home Team" for the 2007-2008 school year.

"We wanted to team up with an organization that had a good mission, and the CPC has just that," said head coach Lydia Smith. "They help by serving women in the community by helping to meet their needs, making them aware of the choices they have, along with the responsibilities that come along with being a mother.  We began serving there on Dr. Martin Luther King Day and have made an effort to serve most Wednesdays to help in any way possible."

"Our tasks have come in a various forms such as, sorting through clothing & an assortment of donated items, making diaper bags for new mothers, and cleaning their facility as needed.  We're happy to be able to support an organization that promotes, serves, and loves others as Jesus Christ has called us to do."

Mobile, Ala., The Belhaven Volleyball team traveled to Mobile, AL last weekend to take part in the NAIA Region XIII Volleyball Tournament.  On Friday, the Lady Blazers dropped a 0-3 contest to Loyola University in their first match of the tournament before falling 0-3 to Lee University.

The Lady Blazers battled GCAC foe Loyola in their first match of the tournament.  The match marked the fourth meeting of the two teams this season.  Although the matches went back and forth, the Wolfpack was able to get the best of the Blazers in straight sets 26-30, 24-30, and 29-31.  Leading the way for the Blazers was Roz Sabella (10 kills), Kelsey Stack (32 set assists), Ashley Morgan (27 digs), and Amanda Evans (8.5 blocks).

Facing elimination, Belhaven went up against a very talented  Lee University team.  The Lady Flames went undefeated in Southern States Athletic Conference play to win the conference championship.  The match was also very close but just like the first, the Lady Blazers were never able to grab enough momentum and fell 28-30, 13-30, and 26-30.  Statistical leaders for the Blazers on the offensive side of the net were Sara Ayala and Kelsey Stack, with 6 kills and 18 setting assists, respectively.  On defense, Roz Sabella recorded a team high 13 digs, while Amanda Evans chipped in with 7 blocks.

With the loss, the Lady Blazers season comes to an end.
