Blazers Team with Perkins Center on MLK Day
January 21, 2008

JACKSON, Miss. - The Lady Blazer softball squad once again participated in the Martin Luther King Day activities this past Monday by taking time out of their busy schedules to help those in the community. The players, led by Head Coach Rick Fremin, worked with the Perkins Center throughout the day in south Jackson. Together, those involved worked to beautify the area by picking up debris, raking up loose leaves and landscaping the facility. “The players look forward to this event each year as a way of give back," said Rick Fremin.

Jackson, Miss., On Thursday, September 13, 2007, the Belhaven College Softball team went to The Mustard Seed, which is located in Brandon, MS.

The Mustard Seed is a Christian based organization for mentally disabled adults that cannot live on their own. While visiting, the Lady Blazers spent time with these men and women playing games and dancing.

One of the ways that money is brought into the organization is by the pottery they make. Many of the adults painted dinner wear and Christmas ornaments that are sold in their gift shop.

The day was filled with fun and laughter. Bonds were built between the Lady Blazers and members of the Mustard Seed community. Some even gave players their addresses in hopes of continuing their relationship. There was such a bond that the Lady Blazer Softball team decided to make The Mustard Seed their “Home Team.”

“We do our best to get involved once a semester in an area of need," said Rick Fremin. "It was great working with NCC and Mr. Turner, the Executive Director. I think the girls really enjoyed making a difference."

Lady Blazers Trade Bats For Hammers To Help With Local
Habitat For Humanity Build

The Belhaven College Softball Team participated in a local Habitat For Humanity build on Saturday, September 10 in the Jackson area.  The team, along with Head Coach Rick Fremin and Assistant Coach Alana Worthington, worked the entire day on the new construction on Hite Street in the city of Jackson.

"We had a great time doing the work," said Coach Fremin.  "When you are there you're not really thinking about doing the work, but the individuals who will be benefiting from the finished product.  This was a worthwhile project for us all to be a part of and be a part of together as a team."

The Lady Blazers were part of several groups that worked around the site laying the roof, putting up siding and painting inside the house.  The ladies were able to meet the homeowners and work alongside the family to help build their home.
