Five Tennis Players Named NAIA Scholar Athletes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Five Belhaven tennis players found their names on the 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete list as announced by the national office on Friday morning.

In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.

Savannah Zachry, a senior from Madison, Mississippi was the one representative on the women's side. Zachry matched success in the classroom with an outstanding season on the court as well. She went 10-4 in singles play this season at three different positions, while also tagging up with Shelley Munn to go 9-6 between the second and third doubles spots.

On the men's side, Blake Hilgenkamp, Jim Scott, Jonathan West and Robby Wright all found themselves above the 3.5 mark. Hilgenkamp, West and Wright all just finished their senior seasons, while Scott has one more year of eligibility remaining.

Scott was 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles in 2013.

Belhaven men's tennis ended their season on Wednesday with a narrow loss to Xavier (La.) in the second round of the NAIA national tournament. The women finished with a loss to William Carey in the SSAC quarterfinals.
