Blazer Tennis Holds Solid in Latest Polls

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the fourth straight poll the Belhaven men and women's tennis teams made appearances on the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' poll as released by the national office on Tuesday afternoon.

The Belhaven men faced another tough stretch of contests, going 2-1 in match play last week and improving to 10-3 on the season. A week of good results did not impact the voters enough as the Blazers stayed at 14th in the rankings.

They opened the week with a home match versus No. 6 William Carey. The Crusaders took all three doubles matches, which set the tone for the remainder of the matchup between the two highly ranked teams.

Belhaven ultimately fell to William Carey 6-3.

The men responded with the early-week loss with wins over Mobile, 8-1, and Jackson State, 6-3.

Auburn-Montgomery stayed as the No. 1 team on the men's side after Embry-Riddle stumbled in a few matches two weeks ago. William Carey (6th) and Belhaven are the only other teams from the Southern States Athletic Conference in the top 25 poll. Coastal Georgia fell out of the rankings after three losses in a row.

On the women's side, Belhaven remained at 23rd despite a 9-0 loss to second-ranked William Carey.

After a loss on Monday, the Belhaven women traveled to Mobile, Alabama the next day to take on the Rams. Belhaven dropped the top spots in both doubles and singles, but wrangled away a 6-3 victory by soundly defeated the Rams across the bottom of the lineup.

Brenau remains the No. 1 in the women's poll with William Carey and Auburn-Montgomery finishing second and third. No. 15 Coastal Georgia and No. 20 Lee also make appearances in the poll from the SSAC.

The Blazers (8-4) plays the top-ranked Brenau Golden Tigers on Friday before ending the season with Louisiana College, Loyola and Tougaloo before the SSAC Tournament.
