Bulldogs Grind Out Tough Win over Blazers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – For the second time in as many days, the Belhaven women's tennis team played a match against a top 25 team in the NAIA. The 22nd ranked Cumberland Bulldogs and No. 24 Blazers battled the entire afternoon, but two three-set wins in singles spurred Cumberland to an overall 6-3 match victory.

Cumberland (1-2) entered the match searching for their first victory of the season, while Belhaven (4-3) was hoping to avoid their first back-to-back losses of 2013.

The Bulldogs kicked off the doubles matches with a quick 8-1 win at the first flight to register the first point.

After a lengthy match in their doubles match on Friday against Auburn-Montgomery, Shelley Munn and Savannah Zachry had a tougher time against the Bulldogs' second team on Saturday. They could never find their footing in the match and ultimately were defeated 8-3 to put the Blazers in a 2-0 hole.

The Blazers' third doubles squad came through when the team needed it most, breezing their way to an 8-3 victory. Indi Mire and Natalia Krier played together for the first time during the weekend tournament and looked like a team on the mission for the Blazers.

Cumberland took a commanding 4-1 lead after sweeping first and second singles 6-0, 6-1 in each match. Belhaven would not go away however, as Zachry and Elizabeth Chrestman each won at fourth and sixth singles respectively. The two wins at those spots made the match a much more manageable 4-3 score in favor of Cumberland.

Krier dropped the first set 4-6 to Anita Racz, but came back to win the second set in a tiebreaker to send the match to a third set. Racz was able to hold Krier off in a third set tiebreak 10-5 to clinch the match win for the Bulldogs.

Cumberland would go on to add an extra point with a win at five singles.

Belhaven will look to regroup over spring break and get back into the win column when they host LSU-Shreveport on March 22.
