Blazer Tennis Teams Make Appearances on Coaches' Polls

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the third straight poll the Belhaven men and women's tennis teams made appearances on the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' poll as released by the national office on Tuesday afternoon.

The Belhaven men faced their toughest week of matches of the 2013 when they traveled to the Auburn-Montgomery Spring Invitational before Belhaven's spring break. The Blazers had two matches scheduled against teams ranked in the top 15 in the second NAIA poll, then-No. 15 Campbellsville and then-No. 2 Auburn-Montgomery.

Belhaven handled the Tigers of Campbellsville well and came away with a confidence-boosting 8-1 victory in the opening match.

Saturday's match against the Warhawks proved to be a much tougher test for the Blazers. Auburn-Montgomery's six ranked individuals showed their reasons for being so highly touted, coming up with a clean 9-0 sweep of a talented Belhaven squad.

Belhaven also defeated NCAA opponent Louisiana College 9-0 earlier in the week to improve to 5-2 on the year. The loss against the Warhawks did not drastically affect the Blazers' rating, but they did fall from 12th to 14th in the latest poll.

Auburn-Montgomery became the No. 1 team on the men's side after Embry-Riddle stumbled over the weekend. William Carey (6th) and Coastal Georgia (21st) were the only other teams from the Southern States Athletic Conference in the top 25 poll.

On the women's side, Belhaven slid up one spot to 23rd despite two losses to Auburn-Montgomery and Cumberland (Tenn.) in the AUM Spring Invitational.

Belhaven fell on the wrong side in both matches of the tournament, but had strong performances across the board. The Blazers were a few tiebreakers in each match away from coming home with two big wins rather than two losses.

Brenau is the new No. 1 in the women's poll with William Carey and Auburn-Montgomery finishing second and third. No. 15 Coastal Georgia and No. 18 Lee also make appearances in the poll from the SSAC.

The Blazers (4-3) will look to get back on the winning side of things with an action-packed Green and Gold Weekend March 22-23. Belhaven will play four matches in two days against Spring Hill, LSU-Shreveport, Rust College and Mobile.
