The Blazers found it difficult to penetrate a tough Covenant defense, as they were held to only nine shots on goal. Covenant was able to score in the 13th minute of the game, with a header that just went over the reach of Blazer goal keeper Julien Henriques. That would be all Covenant needed, as the Blazers were backed up on their end of the pitch for most of the match. The Blazers struck early as Sergei Yepishin scored off a pass from David McKay. The Blazers have overcome early struggles to win 4 games in a row. The rest of the first half saw the Blazers and Statesmen battle it out at midfield as both team's defenses would send the ball out of their end. Delta State's Aaron Wilbanks scored a goal with five minutes left in the first half to knot the halftime score at 1-1. The second half saw the Blazers get on the board early again as Brett Clifton scored off a Stefan Fernandez assist for the final goal of the game. The Blazers then controlled the tempo for the rest of the match and did not allow the Statesmen to put together any strong offensive attack. The defense smothered the ball sending it out of their end, stifling any opportunity that the Statesmen tried to put together. The Blazers will be back in GCAC action on Saturday as they host the Spring Hill Badgers at H.T. Newell Field. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.

In a physical game, the Blazers took a 1-0 lead into the half as Jamie Caul scored the lone first half goal via penalty kick at the 42 minute mark. In the second half, with their streak on the line, the Bulldogs turned up the pressure and the Blazers were all too happy to respond by bringing the game to the home team. The Bulldogs' Veiga Ghilherme tied the game at 1-1 with his goal at the 56 minute mark. Seven minutes later, Brett Clifton answered as he scored on an assist by John Kehoe. The Blazers would lead the rest of the game as Jamie Caul scored on a second penalty kick at the 80 minute mark to put the Blazers up 3-1. Ghilherme scored his second goal of the game as he scored on a penalty kick at the 82 minute mark. The Blazers' James Poole would answer just 1 minute later with the game's final goal on an assist by Brett Clifton. The first half saw the Blazers press hard to keep the ball in the William Carey end and play defense. The second half saw the Crusaders employ the same strategy as they kept the pressure on the Blazers, but the Blazers' defense was equal to the task. Led by Julien Henriques' 2 saves and and several blocks by Blazers' defenders, the Crusaders were unable to tally a goal giving the Blazers the victory. Goal keeper Julien Henriques had 10 saves and kept the Gents off the scoreboard for the first 69 minutes of play. The gents got their first goal off a penalty kick by the Gent's Aaron Volanski. Men's Soccer Shuts Out Crichton
Memphis, Tenn.,
The Belhaven College men's soccer team (2-0) hit the
road Monday to take on Crichton College in Memphis, TN.
Thanks to late second half goals from Simon Babba and
Daniel Bond, the Blazers were able to pull out the 2-0
victory and move to 2-0 on the season.
New turf on the field
resulted in poor playing conditions which made it tough
for the Blazers to find any momentum in the first
half. Luckily, Crichton had just as much trouble, and
the scored remained tied 0-0 at the half.
The second half was
much like the first, until Belhaven finally got on the
scoreboard when Daniel Bond found the back of the net to
put the Blazers up 1-0 in the 75th minute. That goal
proved to be all the offensive showing that would be
needed to pull out the win, but Simon Babba added
another goal 5 minutes later to secure the 2-0 victory.
The Blazers will be
back at home at Newell Field Friday, August 31, in
action against Texas College. Game time is slated for
2:30 PM, directly following the women's game.
Men's Soccer Dominates In Season Opener
Jackson, Miss., The Belhaven College Blazers men's soccer team won their season opener in impressive fashion as they defeated Concordia College by a score of 3-1 on Saturday night. The Blazers kept the pressure on as they were able to keep the ball on the Concordia side of the field for most of the match. Brett Clifton scored the first goal of the Blazers season at the 22:00 minute mark, and the Blazers never looked back. Alan Hannon added a goal at the 32:00 minute mark to round out the first half of scoring. The second half saw an already physical match get more heated as both teams collected yellow cards but were disciplined enough to keep the action confined to the game.
