Champions of Character
The Athletic Department here at Belhaven College is totally
committed to "The Champions of Character" program that has been instituted by
the NAIA. The following examples illustrate our desire to serve our community
and our nation as ambassadors of goodwill for the NAIA.
Belhaven College participated in
a community service event that focused on cleaning up and improving several
areas of the city of Jackson, Mississippi. The Belhaven athletic department was
well represented in this endeavor as student athletes and coaches carried out a
variety of tasks in an effort to serve our community. Some of these tasks
included: cleaning up a vacant lot in the near downtown Jackson area, "gutting"
the inside of an old house, picking up trash and cleaning out gutters along city
streets.
Other additional projects done by Belhaven athletes have
been:
- Our volleyball team and tennis team visited the Admiral
Retirement Center on several occasions to sing and share with the residents.
- During the season, our Volleyball team visited a hospital
on a road trip to LaGrange, Georgia and went into patient's rooms to pray for
patients.
- While on a road trip to West Alabama University, the
volleyball team stopped at a Wal-Mart parking lot and assisted people to their
cars with their purchases.
- Also, our baseball team had a guest speaker talk to them
before a practice about the subject of organ donations.
- Our football coaches have held several meetings with their
players to discuss the biblical values of honesty,
integrity, work ethic, and accountability.
- Our women's athletic coaches and players met one night and
a guest speaker, Ruth Russell, talked to them about purity, relationships,
and the role of a woman in a relationship.
- Our tennis team assisted in a practice at Terry High School
and instructed the high school athletes.
- Our tennis teams compiled 20 notebooks of popular hymns and
worship songs in large print for a local retirement center. The notebooks
were presented on a Sunday morning to the residents. There was a special
music program and someone spoke to the residents.
These are some of the things that our athletic department is
attempting to emphasize on our campus. We believe that it is very important
that our athletes understand the importance of being a "Champion" with
character.
