Cleveland, Tenn., The Belhaven Blazers Baseball Team (41-16, 23-10) lost their opening round game in the 2008 Region XIII Tournament to #3 lee University by a score of 0-15. Riley Galloway (8-3) took the loss for the Blazers as he pitched 4 innings, allowing 8 earned runs. Joe Diecidue, Andy Kuehn, and Sean Steverson each pitched an inning of relief in the game.

Blaise King reached base 3 times in the ballgame. He was 1 for 2 with a walk, and reached in the first inning on a strike out when the catcher allowed the pitch to get away from him.

MOBILE, Ala—The Belhaven College Blazers used the long ball to eliminate host Spring Hill College from the 2008 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Friday evening with an impressive 16-4 victory. The victory guarantees that the Blazers will finish no lower than 6th in the region giving them a berth to the 2008 Region Tournament in Cleveland, TN.

Batting 7th and 8th in the Blazers’ lineup, DH Joe Scalzo and catcher Brian McCormick combined to go 7-for-8 with 10 RBI and 4 homers.  Each player smacked two homers as Belhaven scored 13 runs between the 5th and 7th innings to run away with the ball game.

While the offense teed off to the tune of 17 hits, Belhaven starter Kyle Buescher cruised to the victory by scattering 8 hits over 7 innings and limiting the Badgers to 4 runs.

Scalzo smacked his first homer of the game, a 2-run shot, in the 4th inning to give Belhaven a 3-0 lead, and then the Blazers erupted with their late run production.

The Blazers sent 12 batters to the plate in a 6-run 5th and then three homers over the 6th and 7th frames iced the game. McCormick smoked a 3-run shot in the 6th, and then Scalzo and McCormick went back-to-back in the 7th inning.

Bryan Bennett finished 3-for-4 and Chris Hartfield finished 2-for-4 for the Blazers. Justin Harrison went 3-for-5 for the Badgers and Pat O’Malley went 2-for-4 at the plate.

May 1, 2008

Courtesy of GCAC Tournament Staff

MOBILE, Ala—The 3rd-seeded Belhaven College Blazers staved off elimination for another day by using a 7-run 7th inning to rally and knock top-seeded University of Mobile to an elimination game Friday at noon.

Belhaven had runners aplenty in the early going, but Mobile’s Jesse Luker kept working out of trouble, stranding 9 Blazer runners through 6 innings of work to help the Rams to a 5-2 lead.

But, Belhaven more than made up for the earlier miscues by touching up reliever Ira Turner for seven runs in the 7th. The Blazers sent 13 batters to the plate in the game-changing inning and Reg Ott, Brian McCormick, Shawn Anderson and Charlie Edwards produced run-scoring singles, while Austin Fagan plated a pair with a single.

The Rams had built a 3-0 lead after one inning of action, when Carlos Romero and Daine Solomon produced 2-out RBIs, and then the teams traded deuces in the 5th to set the stage for the 7th-inning fireworks.

Brian Legnon was the winner for the Blazers, going 7 innings, allowing 3 earned runs and scattering 12 hits. Anderson finished 2-for-4, Edwards picked up two hits, Ott went 2-for-5 with 3 RBI, Brian McCormick went 3-for-4 and Chris Hartfield finished 2-for-4 for the Blazers.

For the Rams, Daine Solomon finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, Carlos Romero went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, Kevin Orso went 3-for-5 and Nelson Curry finished the game 2-for-5 at the plate for the Rams.

A bright spot for 8th-ranked Mobile came in the 1st inning when Luker struck out Bryan Bennett and Charlie Edwards to move into first-place on the all-time strikeouts list at the University of Mobile. The senior lefty is also the career leader in wins and innings pitched.

The Rams fall to an elimination game at noon Friday against the loser of the LSU-Shreveport/William Carey ball game, while the Blazers move on to face Spring Hill College at 3:30 Friday.

Blazers Fall Short Behind Galloway's Gem

MOBILE, Ala—The 4th-seeded William Carey University pulled out a 4-0 victory over 3rd-seeded Belhaven on day one of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Wednesday at Stan Galle Field.

The game was a pitcher’s duel between the Crusaders’ Lance Brewer and Belhaven’s Riley Galloway, as William Carey held a tenuous 1-0 lead through 8, before tacking on 3 insurance runs in the final frame.

Brewer stranded five runners early, before settling down to allow only one base runner over the final 4 frames. The righty limited the Blazer bats to four hits while fanning 6 in a complete game effort. William Carey gave Brewer an early run when Greg Alexander singled home Michael Lewis in the 3rd to score an unearned run.

Galloway kept the Crusaders in check from there, allowing only one earned run on eight hits in 8.2 innings pitched.  Galloway sat down 13 batters in a row before a pair of 2-out singles in the 9th chased him.  Closer Kyle Medley came on with a pair on and two outs and got what would’ve been an inning-ending strikeout, but a wild pitch allowed pinch hitter Steven Moore to reach first base bringing in another run for the Crusaders

The Crusaders capitalized on an error by third baseman Brent Hudson scoring two more runs in the ninth inning to expand the lead to 4-0.  Lewis went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Crusader batters. Brandon Chretien went 2-for-4 for William Carey and Chris Hartfield went 1-for-2 at the plate for Belhaven.

William Carey (36-20) advances to play the winner of LSU-Shreveport v. Spring Hill at 7:00 pm Thursday, while Belhaven (39-15) will face top seed Mobile at 3:30 Thursday.

Mobile, Ala. - Spring Hill College dropped both halves of a doubleheader to conference foe Belhaven College (37-13, 22-10 GCAC) by the scores of 11-8 and 11-0 on Saturday at Stan Galle Field.

The first game saw the Badgers erupt for five runs in the fifth inning to grab a 5-3 lead off Blazer starter Chris Hartfield.  In the frame, pinch hitter Jared Bonvillian crushed a two-run homer to left field followed just four batters later by first baseman Brad Holstein's two-run shot over the leftfield fence.

The Blazers answered the challenge in the sixth inning by tying the game off a two- run double by left fielder Reg Ott.  Spring Hill, however, sprang back into action in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run outburst led by run-scoring singles by Holstein and right fielder Ryan Hall.

In the seventh, Badger reliever Mario Garcia (2-4) surrendered four runs off three hits including a two-run homerun by pinch hitter Brian McCormick.

Riley Galloway (7-1) was the winner in relief while Kyle Medley picked up his ninth save of the year for Belhaven.

The second game was scoreless through four innings as Spring Hill starter Taylor Chadick (3-6) and Belhaven's Kyle Buescher (4-1) both settled into early grooves, but it would be Chadick who blinked first, giving up a two-run homer to right to second baseman Blaise King in the fifth inning.  The Blazers offense then opened the floodgates and scored five runs in the sixth inning to go with four more in the seventh.
