Athletics Department
Vision and Mission
The Intercollegiate Athletics Department of
Belhaven College is committed to the Vision and Mission of the College
through academic preparation and competition. The Department encourages
every individual and team to achieve their highest potential in
intercollegiate athletic competition. The Department is dedicated to
guiding each athlete into a more surrendered relationship to Christ as
they develop intellectually, socially and physically. Athletics
provides a unique environment for demonstrating and teaching the virtues
of self-control, patience, love, service, respect for authority, ethics,
leadership, hard work, and dedication, as they relate to the teachings
of Jesus Christ and Biblical principles. The department will take every
opportunity to use athletics as a platform for sharing the gospel.
What is a Blazer?
The Blazer is the essence of the mission for
the Belhaven College Athletics
Department. The definition of a
Blazer,
adopted by the Belhaven College Athletics Department, is a
Christ-centered athlete. A Blazer
signifies an individual who is devoted to Christ and is striving within
his or her ability to please God as a student-athlete. A Blazer
is more than a college mascot or symbol; it is the essence of what
Christ commands us to be.
Two biblical passages serve as the foundation for
an understanding of the Blazer. The first is Matthew 5:16 and the other
is Isaiah 26:8.
“In the
same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your
good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
(Matthew 5:16, ESV)
“Yes,
Lord, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and
renown are the desire of our hearts.” (Isaiah 26:8, NIV)
An athlete has a unique opportunity to be
seen and admired by others. This is why a Blazer
must redirect that admiration toward God so that others may follow their
example to lead a Christ-centered life. The hope for the Blazer
is that as Christ shines through; lost souls stumbling in spiritual
darkness will be attracted to Him who is the light of the world.
