The Lee University Flames Celebrate Their Region XIII Victory

Jackson, Miss., - Congratulations to the Lee University Flames, Champions of the 2007 NAIA Region XIII baseball tournament. The Flames sailed through the bracket defeating all challengers in a regional tournament that included five nationally ranked teams. Lee defeated #4 Auburn University-Montgomery twice and #9 Belhaven College once. With the win, the Flames advance to the Atlantic South Super Regional where they will host the St. Thomas Bobcats.

In their first game, the Flames defeated the host Belhaven Blazers by a score of 9-6. The Blazers pitcher Paul Faulkenberry carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning when the Flames' bats came to life. The Flames scored two in the seventh, five in the eighth, and two in the ninth off a host of Blazers relief pitchers who had been a reliable part of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Champion Blazers throughout the season.

The Flames' second game was their closest of the tournament, as they went on to defeat the Southern Polytechnic State University Hornets by a score of 4-2. Lee jumped out to a 4-0 lead, then rode the arm of Cody Campbell to a complete game victory. Campbell yielded two earned runs on four hits, while striking out six.

On the third day, the Flames faced the #1seeded Auburn University-Montgomery Senators, and the Flames' lumber came to life. The Flames jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings, but a seven-run fifth inning sealed the Senators' fate and sent the Flames to a 14-1 victory.

The tournament championship was a rematch of the Flames and the AUM Senators. The Senators jumped out to a 6-1 lead by the fifth inning.  However, the Flames were up for the task. They scored three runs in the sixth, four in the seventh, and two in the eighth, giving them the 10-8 victory that secured the 2007 Region XIII Championship.

The Flames will now go home and prepare to host the St. Thomas University Bobcats. Exact times and dates are to be determined. For more information visit www.leeuniversity.edu/athletics.
